OH MY GOODNESS...Olney is Rumor Mill Central, isn't it?!?
Despite our efforts
to the contrary (doesn't anyone READ that mirror over the coffee bar? "Please Gossip Responsibly"...it's
a good bit of advice, Olneyites!!!...), there is much talk about town regarding Ophelia's Cup, and if it is to believed,
then we are just utterly exhausted doing all sorts of stuff.
From what I hear (and I'm sure I hear only
a small fraction), Jay and I have sold this place, we are divorcing, we are losing everything and leaving under the cover
of darkness, we are closing in July, we are closing in August, we are closing tomorrow, we have sold to some snotty
out of towners who plan to change everything, we have sold to each and every one of the Fehrenbachers, we have sold to
a couple who are going to make it a topless bar...
I could go on. It is ALL NOT TRUE, but it is ALL CRAZY.
Now, really, people, do we want to engage in CRAZINESS or shall we just wake up each and every day with the firm and happy
belief that things are, well, NORMAL? I've done my best to not take it personally and to not dignify any of these
stupid rumors, but I'm approaching my limit. Frankly, Olney is a lovely town, and a wonderful place to raise a family.
We have been very happy here for the last ten years. We have made many wonderful friends in the time that we've
been here. It is difficult, to say the least, to have my children come home asking us if we are divorcing/bankrupt/in
trouble with the authorities/etc. Nor is it any easier to shop for groceries and have another pat on my arm, another
sympathetic tone, as I'm consoled for the demise of my marriage/business/reputation/livelihood. I certainly appreciate
all of the good will, but were these rumors to not be repeated, then, well, I could receive public good will
in the form of patronage at the business we are working mightily to maintain, for the continuation of what we feel is a resurgence
in your charming Downtown.
Thank you to all of you who have shared kind words with me these last few months.
I appreciate your sentiment. Now, let's all just ENJOY what we have in our charming little city, and not put any
more energy or time or attention, for that matter, to words that are hurtful, defeating, and simply UNTRUE.
